London is a city where the queue outside a restaurant can mean everything — or absolutely nothing. I spent two weeks eating my way through Central, East, and South London, specifically to answer this question for you. A typical budget for food in London is around £40–£80 per day (約HKD 390–780) if you mix sit-down meals with street food — but排錯隊就係白花錢囉。
London is best visited for food between September and November, when the summer tourist crowds thin out but the restaurants are still fully staffed. Getting around is easy — the London Underground (TfL) covers almost every spot I mention below. Oyster card or contactless card, 唔使買single tickets,係咁先得㗎。Currency is GBP, most places take card but Borough Market stalls are cash-friendly too.
Borough Market:
Kappacasein Cheese Toastie
Monmouth Coffee
Dishoom:
Dishoom全線分店喺Time Out London都有詳細評分,可以cross-check一下。
Pappardelle with Beef Shin Ragù,£8.50(約HKD 83)。
Flat Iron Steak(某幾間分店)
Bao(Soho)
Honey & Co(Fitzrovia)
London is a city that rewards the patient eater — but only if you're patient about the right things.

How much does eating out in London cost per day?
A realistic food budget in London is £40–£80 per day (約HKD 390–780). Street food and market stalls like Borough Market can be as low as £7–£15 per meal. Sit-down restaurants average £15–£35 per person for lunch. Dinner at a mid-range London restaurant typically runs £25–£50 per person before drinks. If you're budget-conscious, lunch at Padella (£8.50–£12) or Borough Market stalls is excellent value.
Is Dishoom worth the queue in London?
Yes — specifically for the Bacon Naan Roll at breakfast (£9.90, 約HKD 96) and the Black Dal at lunch (£9.50, 約HKD 92). The queue is real and regularly 45–60 minutes on weekends at Covent Garden. Strategy: arrive 25–30 minutes before opening, or try the King's Cross or Shoreditch branches where wait times are typically 15–20 minutes shorter. Groups of 2 or fewer can ask about indoor standing spots to get seated faster.
What is the best time to visit London for food travel?
The best time to visit London for food is September to November. Summer (June–August) brings peak tourist crowds which means longer queues at popular spots like Borough Market and Dishoom. Autumn sees thinner crowds, full restaurant staffing, and seasonal menus with British autumn produce. For Borough Market specifically, weekday mornings (Wednesday–Thursday, before noon) are significantly less crowded than weekends.
Which London food markets are worth visiting?
Borough Market (London Bridge, open Wed–Sat) is the most established and genuinely good if you shop strategically — go for the Kappacasein cheese toastie (£7, 約HKD 68) and the meat and cheese vendors rather than the prepared food stalls with 30+ minute queues. Maltby Street Market in Bermondsey (Saturday mornings only) is smaller but has less tourist traffic. Broadway Market in Hackney (Saturday) is excellent for local independent food producers.
How do I get around London to visit restaurants without overpaying for transport?
Use an Oyster card or tap your contactless bank card directly — single-journey tube tickets cost significantly more. The daily cap on Zone 1–2 travel is around £8.10 (約HKD 79), which covers most central London restaurant areas. Borough Market is at London Bridge (Zone 1), Dishoom Covent Garden is near Covent Garden station (Zone 1), and Padella is steps from Borough Market. Walk between nearby spots when possible — London's food neighbourhoods are denser than they look on the map.
Are London restaurants cash-only or do they take cards?
The vast majority of London restaurants and cafés are card-only or strongly card-preferred as of 2024. Borough Market stalls vary — most of the established vendors accept contactless, but a few smaller produce stalls prefer cash. It's worth carrying £20–£30 cash as backup, but you won't need it for any of the sit-down restaurants mentioned in this article. Dishoom, Padella, and Flat Iron all accept card and contactless.
